Granite Countertop FAQs

  • What cleaning products should I use?

When you have BCG South Marble & Granite create your custom granite countertop, we use a special impregnator that penetrates and protects the surface. The product is available for purchase in our offices, and it will ensure long-lasting beauty.

Granite is very durable, and polished granite should be cleaned and cared for in the same way polished marble is treated. You should use DuPont StoneTech Revitalizer or a similar specially formulated product. After applying a specialized granite cleaner, wipe it away with a cotton cloth.

If you don’t have a product like that, you can use a mild, phosphate-free, and biodegradable liquid dish soap, soap flakes, or powder that contains no aromatics. Once you’ve cleaned your countertop, you should rinse and dry it thoroughly with a cotton-flannel or chamois cloth.

If you repeatedly use soap and water, you run the risk of soap buildup that will dull your countertops. You will also lose the high shine that StoneTech Revitalizer produces.

  • Can I cut food on my granite countertops?

You can, although it’s terrible on your knives. The granite surface is much harder than a wood chopping block or plastic cutting board. Cutting against the granite will dull your knives quickly.

  • How should I seal the stone surface?

We recommend that you seal your granite countertops every year or, at the very least, every other year. A specialized quality product like DuPont StoneTech Impregnator Pro Sealer will penetrate your granite surface, provide an excellent seal, and make your countertop look like new.

We’ll seal your countertop during our fabrication process and again during the installation. If you seal it again, we recommend waiting for one to two weeks after the installation to allow the water we use during the fabrication process to evaporate completely.

  • How can I avoid chips and cracks?

Granite is an extremely tough stone that is unlikely to suffer damage under regular use. Unfortunately, the kitchen poses a lot of hazards to granite. Be careful to avoid dropping pots, pans, and other heavy objects onto your countertops. You should never allow children to sit, stand, or hang on the overhangs — these are the most vulnerable parts.

If you happen to chip your granite countertop, keep the chip and give us a call. In most cases, we can repair the surface.

  • Will my granite countertop stain?

Granite is somewhat porous, and some colors are more porous than others. As such, coffee, wine, and other acidic liquids may stain the surface. You should wipe up spills immediately. If you cut lemons, limes, or other acidic produce, be sure to use a cutting board.

Some colors may develop water spots, but those will evaporate in time, and your countertop will return to its natural color.
